I happen to be the queen of substitutions. It's a title I've reigned myself with, but when it comes to gluten free, allergy friendly, and vegan baking, it's a title an avid baker must carry.
On my past visit home to Ohio, my father, who is on a ketogenic diet for health reasons, he was craving my SWEET POTATO BISCUITS. And never one to deny anyone of a Bubble Girl treat, I decided to make just a few simple substitutions from my original recipe in an effort to reduce the carbohydrate count in these fan favorites. Insert warm weather, a white sandy beach, a tropical drink with an umbrella, and a good book.
A jaded New Yorker in the midst of a brutal, bone chilling winter can dream, can't she?
This past weekend we hosted yet another fabulous meeting of the minds for our monthly book club. The pick of the month was ME BEFORE YOU by Jojo Moyes, a highly acclaimed novel that was, by far, the most moving, tug-at-your-heart-strings book I've read to date. READ MORE

Despite the frigid fifteen degrees that is New York right now, I'm channeling the warm, Southern winds of New Orleans today in celebration of Fat Tuesday! As they say, mind over matter.
I spent a majority of my twenties in a bar, either bartending or bar hopping. Needless to say, and despite the fun, it was by far the most unhealthy decade of my life. Uncovering my gluten intolerance and thirty food allergies was the wake-up call I needed to get my life back on track, body and mind. READ MORE

Just when you thought March was a dull month of mediocre weather and no bank holidays, there was National Banana Cream Pie Day. Enter rays of sunshine and a gospel choir.
I've loved the banana since childhood. As a child, I used to tell this completely so not funny, ever so senseless Knock-Knock joke that went a little something like this...

I happen to be a huge proponent of efficiency. That, and wine consumption.
Time efficiency, cost efficiency, sleep efficiency, kitchen efficiency. Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, bubbly and Bordeaux. You name it, I'm behind it.
So when I came home the other day to the gem of a gift that is my brand new ice cream maker, I thought, why not combine two of my favorite things in the name of a frozen treat: efficiency and wine consumption. READ MORE

I don't know about you, but I'm into simple, awesome things.
Especially simple, awesome things after a good sweat.
Thoughts of this power bowl dance in my head when I'm near the end of a hard workout. Kind of like when sugar plums dance in your head on Christmas Eve, only you're drenched in sweat and starving.
While I don't know much about sugar plums, I do know that after I workout the last thing I want to do is work some more. Enter this recipe. I keep it simple: throw ingredients into a blender and push one button. Boom. READ MORE

I've learned many a lesson over my lifetime...and really, haven't we all?
We all know them, and many we learned when we were just wee ones. Things our parents and teachers preached, like sharing is caring, pay it forward, what goes around comes around, the list goes on.
Then there are lessons we learn from specific situations. Like the time I spilled an entire box of rice in a really awkward-to-clean spot, but I wouldn't admit it to my mother. READ MORE
